IVF, or in vitro fertilization, means eggs are collected from the woman and mixed with sperm in a lab, outside the body. ICSI takes it one step further. Instead of leaving the egg and sperm to fertilize on their own, an embryologist picks one healthy sperm and injects it directly into the egg using a very fine needle. This is called intracytoplasmic sperm injection, and it’s often used alongside IVF to give fertilization the best possible shot.

IVF vs ICSI, What's the Real Difference?
IVF ICSI together form one of the most reliable fertility treatments out there. In a standard in vitro fertilization Dubai cycle at our clinic, eggs and sperm are placed in a dish and left to do their thing naturally. ICSI is more hands-on. It’s usually recommended when:
- Sperm count is low or movement is weak
- A lot of the sperm are shaped abnormally

- A previous IVF attempt didn’t lead to fertilization

What Actually Happens During an IVF-ICSI Cycle
From your first injection to embryo transfer, expect the whole process to take somewhere between 4 and 6 weeks.
- Step 1: Consultation and Testing – This is where we get to know your case. Hormone blood tests, an ultrasound to check ovarian reserve, and a semen analysis for your partner all help us map out the right approach for you specifically.
- Step 2: Ovarian Stimulation (About 8-12 Days) – You’ll take daily medication to encourage your ovaries to produce more than the usual one egg per cycle. We’ll see you regularly for ultrasounds and blood work so we can adjust the dose if needed, and near the end, a trigger injection helps the eggs mature at just the right moment.
- Step 3: Egg Retrieval – Done under light sedation, so don’t worry, you won’t feel much. A thin needle guided by ultrasound collects the eggs. Most patients are home resting the same afternoon.
- Step 4: Fertilization – Same day as retrieval, the sperm sample is prepared in our lab. Depending on what the semen analysis shows, our embryologists decide whether standard IVF, ICSI, or a combination of both gives your eggs the best chance.
- Step 5: Embryo Growth and Genetic Testing – The fertilized eggs are monitored closely over the next few days. If you’ve opted for genetic testing, a small biopsy is taken from each embryo around day 5. Only the chromosomally healthy ones move forward to transfer.
- Step 6: Embryo Transfer- The strongest embryo is placed in the uterus, typically on day 3 or day 5. No sedation needed here, it’s quick and pretty straightforward. Any remaining healthy embryos can be frozen for later, so you won’t necessarily have to go through stimulation again if you want another try.
- Step 7: The Wait, and the Test – About two weeks after transfer, a blood test tells us whether the cycle worked. If it’s positive, we’ll follow you closely through the early weeks with ultrasounds to make sure everything’s progressing the way it should.
